chamberlain

chamberlain
At the highest level a chamberlain is an officer of the royal household whose duties include the stage-management of coronations, also overseeing the upkeep of royal buildings. He was originally responsible for the bed-chamber of the monarch. The word was applied at lower levels of society to those whose duties included looking after the bedrooms in an inn, or in the houses of those rich enough to retain a number of servants. In Joseph Andrews, by Henry Fielding, Mrs Towwouse, the innkeeper’s wife, shouts for her chamberlain to attend on Joseph, who is lying sick in one of the bedrooms: ‘Chamberlain, where the devil are you?’
